Pregnancy exercise: contraindications and warning signs


Do not exercise, if you have:
1. Significant heart or lung disease, asthma or
2. Conditions related to the pregnancy: Multiple pregnancy (twins or triplets), cervical insufficiency, placenta praevia after 26 weeks, vaginal bleeding, pregnancy induced high blood pressure
Exercise with caution, if you have:
Very low or very high BMI : severely underweight and severely obese women
Been sedentary for a very long time
Intrauterine growth restriction in current pregnancy
Medical conditions: uncontrolled type 1 diabetes, severe anaemia, poorly controlled high BP, epilepsy or hyperthyroidism or orthopaedic problems
Been smoking heavily pre-pregnancy

Warning signs

Stop exercise immediately and contact your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Calf pain or swelling (which could indicate a blood clot)
  • Contractions or preterm labor
  • Decreased foetal movement (Keep in mind that the baby is often most quiet when you’re most active.)
  • Fluid leaking (or gushing) from your vagina
